Earlier this spring, Vince de Vera and I were fortunate enough to cover the Canada vs. France Davis Cup Tie for AXIS Magazine. For those of you who are not tennis nerds (as we are) the Davis Cup is a giant international team tennis tournament that extends over the whole year. Each tie (or matchup) in the tournament plays out over the course of an entire weekend. A Painstaking Craft, by the Book.

We're in a creative profession. So we joke all the time about our obsessiveness, and how that plays into our craft. But this artist Brian Dettmer is working on a whole other level of patience, vision, and attention to detail. Dettmer created these pieces by carving away old, out of date dictionaries, encyclopedias, and textbooks. He did not insert, paint, or add anything at all - only removed paper.
